We have been working with climate adaptation for several years and are at the forefront in this area. We have not only conducted overarching analyses of cloudburst and flooding risks for our properties but also developed detailed action plans that we are already implementing.
Climate adaptation – a top priority
Climate change and the increasing risk of cloudbursts and flooding may cause damage to our properties. Adapting our buildings to withstand these events is therefore a crucial part of our sustainability work. It is also becoming increasingly important for tenants to know that property owners are taking steps to reduce the risk of flood-related damage.
At the same time, we want our buildings to remain accessible to all – which can be a challenge when flood protection measures, such as raising entrance levels, risk limiting accessibility.
Action plans to safeguard our buildings
Since every property is unique, we have developed tailored action and development plans for all our buildings. These plans help us prioritise measures and prepare for future cloudbursts and flooding. They are based on in-depth analysis and site visits and are reviewed annually. We implement the measures outlined in the plans on an ongoing basis to ensure our buildings are truly future-proof.
Example measures we have implemented in recent years are installation of landscape drains and backwater valves in several courtyards as well as the procurement of flood protection equipment. In several city blocks, we have also installed emergency storage rooms equipped with cloudburst response tools – including water vacuums and backup pumps.
These storage rooms ensure quick access to essential equipment, helping us respond rapidly in the event of a cloudburst or flooding. In doing so, we can minimise damage to our properties.
