Green building certification

Hufvudstaden places great importance on offering vibrant and safe environments for people. Green building certifications are becoming increasingly important to our stakeholders – not least to tenants who demand high standards for environmental performance. Through certifications, we receive an independent sustainability assessment of our buildings and confirmation that they meet key criteria in areas such as energy, indoor climate, and building materials. 

We certify all our buildings using the BREEAM system, with the ambition to achieve a rating of Very Good.

Certifications for sustainable construction

Hufvudstaden is a member of the Sweden Green Building Council, an organisation that promotes environmental and sustainability practices within the construction sector. The organisation provides a range of certification systems that evaluate building performance. The goal is to accelerate the industry's transition toward greater sustainability. 

BREEAM

BREEAM is an international certification system. It is the most widely used environmental certification in Europe and has been applied to over one million buildings worldwide. There are different types of BREEAM certification depending on whether the building is existing or a new development.

BREEM In-Use is used for existing buildings. It evaluates and certifies a building's operational performance through a third-party assessment. The evaluation covers areas such as energy, materials, transport, waste, water, health, accessibility, pollution, and ecology. 

BREEAM-SE is the Swedish adaptation of the international system and is used for newly constructed buildings. In addition to evaluating factors like energy use, indoor climate, waste, and water, it also includes an assessment of the construction phase – such as project management and material selection. 

BREEAM offers five different rating levels: Pass, Good, Very Good, Excellent och Outstanding.
