Skären 9 is located at the junction of Smålandsgatan and Norrlandsgatan in the Bibliotekstan district of central Stockholm. The original building facing the street, designed by Uhlin & Malm, was built in 1984; and the structure in the inner courtyard, was designed by architect Sune Malmquist in 1999. The current renovation and extension was designed by General Architecture and was completed between 2019 and 2021. The property consists mostly of offices, as well as some retail space and a parking garage.
- “We’re extremely happy and honoured with the nomination. The remodelling and extension of Skären 9 has been defined by a sustainable quality mindset in everything from architectural design to material selection. The building has been brought into the 2020s and has taken its place in the urban environment of Bibliotekstan,” says Frida Wijkström, head of the Stockholm business area at Hufvudstaden.
Skären 9 has been given a new height and a new architectural expression with a façade made from Ekeberg marble and light plaster. The extension has expanded the property by 2,900 sqm to a total of 16,600 sqm.
- “We’ve worked to give the whole building a fresh cohesive expression in keeping with its original architecture, where traces of the initial building can be interpreted in rhythm and materials. This is how Skären stands for an idea of how the city can change with respect for architecture and heritage,” says Josef Eder, the architect heading the project for General Architecture.
Every year, Architects Sweden awards the Kasper Salin Prize to a Swedish building or group of buildings of high architectural quality. The prize was established in 1962 on the basis of a dormant donation from Stockholm City architect Kasper Salin (1856–1919).
